[A few months after saving everyone who had been stationed at Ueda Castle, everything seemed to have settled into something of a routine. There were still plenty of people that needed to be saved from various other points in the timeline, but there wasn’t the same sense of crushing hopelessness that there had been. It was almost… nice, in a way. Sure, they still had a lot of work to do, but they also had a purpose along with it.

Speaking of which, it was why Yukimura and Saitou had been sent to Hulao Gate to see what the situation was there. The cold weather wasn’t something that Yukimura was particularly used to, but he didn’t dare to complain. After all, he’d been fortunate enough to be sent on a mission with someone that he worked well together with – he couldn’t ask for anything more than that.

Still, it wasn’t a location that Yukimura recognised, so he couldn’t help but be curious about a few things. So while they were trying to find a place to set up camp, Yukimura decided to ask a few questions.]

Hajime-dono – have you been here before? I do not recognise the location, myself.

At the very least, we will not have to deal with these conditions for too long.

[He finds himself nodding in agreement; that much is true, at least. It isn't that much farther to the first outposts beyond Hulao Gate proper, and if those are manned, that'll be enough to tell them that the gate almost certainly is, and they can go back and start organizing a proper expedition.

If they aren't, well, they'll have to go a bit further to find out, but honestly, Saitou figures the likelihood that someone hasn't taken the gate by now to be rather low.]

I have no doubt that we will succeed.

I too am confident that we will manage. Besides, I am sure that we would not have been sent if they didn't have faith in our abilities.

[More than that, however- there's something else that Yukimura is slightly more concerned about right now.]

Well, it's not as if he can fault anyone else for failing to articulate their feelings. He's not sure he could explain this very well, himself, either...

And he's not sure what else there is to say to that, and somehow that just sends him to asking the stupidest question possible.]

He pulls one side of the blanket off of his own shoulder and holds it out, scooting over to put himself a little closer to Yukimura.]

[That just flusters him in all kinds of ways, but in the end he moves over so that he can share the blanket with Saitou.

-- his blush is going to be painfully obvious from this proximity, but he's just going to try not to think about it. Instead, he lets himself get caught up in the thought that... well. This is actually kind of... nice. As long as he doesn't let himself get carried away again.

There's no harm in enjoying the moment for a while, is there?]

[His blush would be obvious, if Saitou were actually looking at his face. But as close as they are, that seems like asking for more reasons to be flustered, so his eyes are fixed firmly on the ground.]

[They're hardly in the most ideal of places, but he can't imagine more ideal company, and Saitou had long ago come to terms with the idea that one's comrades were worth more than anything else.

He's not sure when exactly Yukimura came to be as important to him as any of his comrades in the Shinsengumi, but it's not surprising, really. Yukimura gave him the same thing they did: unconditional acceptance and respect where he had never found it from others.

And more than that...Yukimura had gone back at his own peril to cheat death itself for Saitou's sake.

How could he think of anyone he'd rather endure this with, after all of that?]

[There are many people that Yukimura would go to those sorts of lengths for, but even he had to admit that Saitou was different. Special. Even if he was only just starting to realise exactly what that meant for them.]

[Words he never thought anyone would say to him, let alone someone like Yukimura.

Suddenly he feels much warmer than he should, for sitting in a tent in a snowy clearing with only one blanket over his shoulders.]

I would never refuse you that.

[In the meantime, though, Yukimura is going to savour it. As well as reach over so that he can make sure Saitou's covered by enough of the blanket.]

I don't believe that I will.

[He's never regretted the people he's chosen to associate himself with, after all. Not even when it led to losing his humanity.

He scoots in a touch closer, without really thinking about it - he just doesn't want Yukimura to get shortchanged on how much of the blanket he keeps.]
