[Today in your main camp, there is a samurai.

On a mission.

No matter where you've chosen to hang out today, you've probably seen him at some point. Rummaging around in whatever boxes or stacks of supplies are out, checking the ground, talking to people just out of your earshot...it seems like he's looking for something.

And judging by the way he occasionally mutters something grumpy and possibly profane under his breath, he doesn't seem to be finding it.

So you're claiming you own his book? [ That gets an arched eyebrow and a sharper look before one hand drops to the sword at his side.]

And who are you? Because you aren't Hijikata Toshizou.

[All that skepticism and thinly veiled hostility is mirrored and just about doubled on Hijikata's face, although he doesn't reach for his own sword yet. The hell does this kid get off saying that?]

And you sure as hell don't look much like the Okita Souji I've known for the past decade and some.

There aren't many people stupid enough to try and impersonate any of the Shinsengumi, let alone the people at the top. Let alone stupid enough to try and do it straight to the face of another of the leaders.

And given that they're already in some crazy mishmash of reality where great names from the Sengoku era and the Three Kingdoms of China are walking around - but even then, they're different people, aren't they? Two versions of the same seems like a stretch even by these standards.

[ Souji is not backing down either although the fact is, nobody would be stupid enough to try to impersonate one of the leaders of the Shinsengumi.

He's still watching the other man, although the fact he actually knows that Toshi-san writes haiku is definitely something very few people would be aware of.]

Don't worry about it. It's not the first thing I've had trouble believing when I saw it around here.

[Or even not around here, but that's a can of worms he's not about to open with anyone not already in the know.

He's still got a level of skepticism about all this himself, but. There are better ways to figure this out than the first one that came to mind - that being "how about you demonstrate your sandanzuki." (Not really the kind of thing you ask a man to do when you're the only convenient target at hand, after all.)

Then you know more of this place than I do. You're the first person I've spoken with here, which may partially explain my reaction.

And while he wasn't really going to bother pondering the deeper implications of this place being distorted not just in terms of time, but also reality - that seemed like a quick enough ticket to making one's head explode...
